AEI’s Program on American Citizenship continues AEI’s robust tradition of scholarship focused on, and informed by, American constitutional and democratic principles. Directed by resident scholar Gary J. Schmitt, the Program aims to strengthen and renew American citizenship broadly understood. Interns will conduct research for the Program’s team on a wide range of topics related to citizenship—including the formal and informal institutions of American government, civic education, military service and attachment to democratic principles or patriotism, veterans issues, civil society, and civic and political participation. Key focus areas will include research in support of journal articles and books, fact-findings assistance for op-eds, and data compiling and analysis for original reports and articles. Additionally, interns will help organize and plan events, and assist with the Program’s social media presence.
Excellent organizational and research skills are required, as are intellectual curiosity and initiative. Applicants should have a strong interest in, and knowledge of, American politics, political institutions, and history. A background in the history of political thought and American political thought is a definite plus.
Intern Scholarship Program
In the summer of 2020, AEI will offer up to six intern candidates a $1,000 monthly living stipend as part of a new need-based scholarship program. Our hope is to allow students who would not be able to do so without financial assistance to reap the academic, professional, and personal benefits of interning at AEI. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until late November. The scholarship application will be posted at aei.org/internships very soon. Please check back for more details next week.
About AEI Internships
AEI internships offer a unique opportunity for undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates to gain experience in research, writing, business, and communications at one of the nation’s leading think tanks. Competitive candidates for these internships will generally possess a 3.4 GPA from a top ranking college or university.
AEI internships last a minimum of 10 weeks and interns are required to work 20-40 hours per week. AEI internships are unpaid; however, interns receive complimentary breakfast and lunch each day and a monthly transportation stipend to assist with commuting costs.
