Product Overview:

VMware is a pioneer of the Software Defined Data Center and we are now investing in bringing the Operational Excellence of Public Cloud Data Center Networks to the Enterprise Private Cloud. To achieve this the team is building a brand new (from scratch), innovative Controller for industry scale network fabric for Enterprise Data Center, bringing unprecedented level of visibility, insight and ease of operation.

You will succeed through creativity, collaboration, and prompt delivery. We’ll provide the real-world experience of conceptualizing, designing, and building new industry defining products from scratch or new features with existing services and tools. The team has a proven record of assimilating interns, fresh college grads, pairing them with mentors, who are experienced and subject matter experts. You’ll have the full support, guidance, and knowledge of our team as we aim to enable our colleagues to do their best work through delightful experiences.

The product is the industry’s first OpenConfig (gNMI, gNOI) based Network Fabric Controller for DC Fabrics. This product builds, monitors (via streaming telemetry) and maintains a Network Fabric (underlay) built using (vendor agnostic) merchant silicon-based switches in a leaf-spine topology. It uses Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence to analyze Telemetry data to identify failures and perform remediation action. Seamless integration with vCenter and NSX-T provides end-to-end visibility and control of virtualized/containerized workloads in DC. The controller is based on a service-oriented architecture, using containerized micro services, using Kubernetes which allows it to scale horizontally (scale out). Model driven and API driven makes the controller versatile and extensible. It is built like a SaaS with CI/CD pipeline. The Controller has a rich, intuitive web-based GUI.

The product incorporates bleeding edge technologies like: Java 11, Kubernetes, Prometheus, Elastic Search, Angular 7 and Machine Learning. We use OpenConfig, an Open Standards for configuring network devices, championed by Google.

Responsibilities:

As an Intern, you will be employing your software and computer science skills to scale a distributed system (Controller), simulating network operations, faults and work on developing innovative solution to improve DC Network Operations. You will learn networking concepts, how DC networks are built and operated.

In this role you will also be researching and working with Distributed Data processing frameworks. Computer Networking coursework and familiarity with TCP/IP is desired. Your work will be incorporated in upcoming product releases.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering with programming skills
  • Distributed Systems, Data Structures coursework
  • Development languages including Java, Python
  • Web application architectures and technologies

Preferred Requirements:
