Organization Overview: Manufacturing Renaissance (MR) is a Chicago based nonprofit nonpartisan organization, founded in 1982. Manufacturing Renaissance focuses its work to build thriving, sustainable communities by connecting them to manufacturing through education, training and local ownership. The successful candidate will work at least 15 hours per week including one day a week out of the executive offices at 3411 W. Diversey, ste. 10, in Chicago. He or she reports to the Director of
External Affairs. The position also supports the traditional media, PR, social media, promotions, and marketing requirements of the management staff and the program operation teams under the direction of Manufacturing
Connect located at their offices on west Chicago Avenue. The nature of this position may require flexibility of schedule to work as needed in the evenings and on the weekends for special events and activities. It is vital that the successful candidate has a mission-committed philosophy.

Position Description: The Media and Communications Coordinator works with the Director of External
Affairs and others in the organization to develop and implement communications strategies with MR’s staff and key constituencies (members of the media; manufacturers; workforce development partners; government and labor leaders; students/families; alumni; educators; community organizations; supporters; funders; prospective funders; coalitions; and board members). The intern’s primary responsibilities are in assisting the Director with marketing and communications in an effort to promote positive public image about our organization, our programs, and our mission among MR’s various audiences, and advance MR’s efforts to raise awareness, support and money. This position will also collaborate with others in the organization to achieve brand consistency, coordination of messages, and the highest standards of external communications. In collaboration with the Director and the management team, this position is will help coordinate organization-wide design, message, and content generation, including electronic and print communications. One of the more important tasks of the coordinator will be the creation and ongoing management of an organization-wide communications calendar. The coordinator is also responsible for working with the Director to create and manage budgets and timelines related to publications and communications.

Print Materials
With the Director

  • Manage creation, production, and dissemination of printed publications for education, development, and administration purposes (such as monthly newsletters, annual report, brochures, and exhibition and event collateral)
  • Manage creation and selection of photography for print and electronic communications
  • Support the development and execution of identity and collateral materials for major organizational initiatives
  • Create and coordinate production schedules and maintain ongoing relationships with graphic designers, mail houses, videographers, printers, and photographers
  • Evaluate and negotiate vendor contracts including photographers
  • Manage the MR in-house style manual

Electronic/New Media

  • Collaboratively manage and coordinate creation and update of web-content; responsible for content- related protocols to keep web site up-to-date
  • Work with technology, outreach, executive, and education team members to ensure ongoing improvement of website, including phased updates and redesigns
  • Implement e-communications for donors and general public
  • Provide organization-wide e-communications support; manage media, outreach and marketing specific Constant Contact/Sales Force database
  • Lead MR’s efforts to remain up-to-date and effective in electronic communications through convening regular meetings, workshops and conversations
  • Pioneer MR’s social media participation, taking organization from a sporadic platform participant to an active and innovative presence on established and new social media outlets
  • Actively monitor MR’s online reach, reputation and effectiveness

Media Relations
Working with Director

  • Assist with media relations for selected events or activities
  • Write and distribute press releases
  • Pitch the local, national media and international media to secure media placement and appearances
  • Maintain and update media archives and contact database

Other Duties as Requested

  • Coordinate the evaluation of potential external media or communications partnership opportunities
  • As needed, perform additional tasks to support the effective operation of a nonprofit organization


  • Currently a Junior or Senior in good standing at the College or University they attend who is pursuing a degree in marketing, communication, and or media, or a recent Communications/Marketing graduate looking for a skills and resume building opportunity.
  • Superior written and verbal skills
  • Creative thinking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated interest in the visual arts and youth education and training
  • Familiarity Windows operating systems; HTML; Microsoft Office; Google Office; Word Press; Adobe

Photoshop, Constant Contact; Survey Monkey; and, Salesforce. Experience managing websites preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively with multiple individuals and manage several projects at once
