Department Summary:

Human Resources is responsible for developing and implementing human resources strategies and programs for the American Chemical Society (ACS). The Washington HR team has the challenge of achieving exceptional customer satisfaction, thus having a direct impact on the value and quality of HR solutions. Washington HR is responsible for coordinating efforts and programs with the Ohio-based HR team and takes a lead, corporate position in the area of Society-wide benefits planning and administration. The customer base is diverse, including current, former and potential employees, management business partners, ACS members, fellow HR Team members and outside vendors. There are also several locations in the United States and across the globe.


ACS has an exciting HR summer internship opening at our headquarters in Washington, DC. The HR Intern will lend support, gain exposure and participate in HR generalist activities, support and gain insight into recruiting, work on projects and event coordination.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Compliance – 35%
    • Assist with the annual reporting of the Conflict of Interest (COI)
    • Assist with the annual reporting of the Affirmative Action Plan (AAP)
    • Assist with gathering appropriate immigration documentation as requested by counsel
    • Audit digital I-9’s
  • Assist the Talent Acquisition Team – 35%
    • Be an active participant in all summer New Employee Orientations (NEO's)
    • Assist with Intern Employee Orientation
    • Assist Recruiters with resume review, scheduling of interviews and greeting of candidates
    • Participate in phone screening of candidates for various open positions
  • Assist with the administration of HR Programs – 25%
    • Intern Program:
      • Manage the internal weekly communications of the interns
      • Create, update, and maintain the intern Intranet page on a SharePoint platform
    • Annual Service Awards:
      • Internal communications with honorees
      • Creating communications for the Society and day of event
    • Returnship
      • Research best practices
      • Create a project plan
      • Make recommendations of Returnship to management
  • Shadow other HR Departments – 5%
    • HR Business Partners
    • Organizational Effectiveness
    • HR Technologies
    • Total Rewards (Compensation and Benefits)
  • Training:
    • Opportunity to attend HR webinars hosted by various companies

  • Meetings:
    • Daily check-in’s with the HR Generalist
    • Weekly 1:1 with the HR Generalist
    • Attend biweekly Talent Acquisition Team HR Business Partner meeting

Education Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be going into their junior or senior year of college, pursuing a degree in Business (HR Mgmt., International Business, Administration, Communications).


Required Qualifications:

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Positive
  • Can-do attitude
  • Desire for learning and bringing new ideas
  • Strong business, interpersonal and organization skills
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a professional and discrete manner
  • Familiarity with HR practice and/or international business
