Software Engineer Internship

It takes powerful technology to connect our brands and partners with an audience of 1 billion. Nearly half of Verizon Media employees are building the code and platforms that help us achieve that. Whether you’re looking to write mobile app code, engineer the servers behind our massive ad tech stacks, or develop algorithms to help us process 4 trillion data points a day, what you do here will have a huge impact on our business—and the world. Want in? As Verizon’s media unit, our brands like Yahoo, TechCrunch and HuffPost help people stay informed and entertained, communicate and transact, while creating new ways for advertisers and partners to connect. With technologies like XR, AI, machine-learning, and 5G, we’re transforming media for tomorrow, too. We're creators and coders, dreamers and doers creating what's next in content, advertising and technology.

OpenStack is an open source cloud software project that is used by Verizon to support its cloud strategy. Verizon operates one of the largest OpenStack deployments in the world, with hundreds-of-thousands of servers all over the world, that run our products and services.

A major challenge in operating infrastructure at very large scale is keeping track of resources, and centralizing that information for other systems to consume. This year the OpenStack team will design and implement a system that will centralize all of the information about compute, storage, and network resources around the world.

Working alongside experienced developers from the open source community, you will implement major components of this new system. There is an opportunity for either a front-end or backend developer on this project. Front-end developers will have several challenges in presenting large amounts of data in a webUI quickly. Backend developers will have challenges working with existing APIs in the system as well as designing new ones.

Experience developing software with Python and working with relational databases will be required. Candidates who have experience contributing to open source projects and/or experience with cloud systems like AWS, Azure, or GCP are preferred but not required. Front end developers should have some experience with user interface design, and backend developers should have some experience working with and creating APIs.
